News and Events

This is an update on the plans for the Outstanding Achievements Awards Dinner being planned as the high point for the “Gathering of the Graduates 2002”, in Port Antonio. Arrangements have now been concluded for the dinner to take place at the Jamaica Crest Hotel at Fairy Hill, just about six miles outside Port Antonio. We are keeping in close touch with the management staff at the Hotel to ensure that everything that can be done to make the evening a success, is done. While it is not yet time to begin counting we would urge all those interested in making the weekend in Port Antonio, and particularly the dinner, to contact the Association as soon as possible. Especially in the case of those persons coming from abroad, we would ask that you give an indication to Edith Walsh-Marsh in the Titchfield Alumni Association of South Florida. This event will be as mentioned in our previous newsletter, the centerpiece of “Gathering of the Graduates 2002”, and we are canvassing your support. As previously communicated to you, the final per person price for the dinner will be US$ 50.00 or J$2,500.00.

NOMINATIONS PLEASE!!!!

The Outstanding Achievement Awards sub-committee now headed by Grace Martin-Hall is now ready to receive your nominations for this years awards. The criteria for the award is that the person must have attended Titchfield for a minimum of two (2) years, and must have achieved outstanding success in any legitimate field of endeavour. The success may be either in Jamaica or overseas. As you can see from the above list, there are many persons who we are yet to honour., and the committee hopes to have a complete list of the persons to be considered by the end of February. In nominating any person, it is necessary to provide a brief biographical sketch, sufficient to give the committee something to work on. This should include, the dates of his/her attendance at Titchfield; what other things he did at school; the nature of the success; the events leading to that success, including schools attended or businesses worked with or created. If the information is not adequate, then providing the nominations are sent in early, the committee will have time to request additional info. Note that the committee itself may make nominations of its own, where it identifies persons worthy of such honour Please submit your nominations to the President of Tosa, Roy K. Anderson, or via email at Tosa@hotmail.com. Nominations are urgently required.

SPORTS UPDATE

Alums will be delighted to hear that the school’s under 16 team won the under 16 championship for rural schools. This is indeed a great achievement, and it vindicates the Principal’s decision, last year, to miss the DaCosta Cup and concentrate on the under 16s. In the game for the national Under 16 Crown, the team were defeated by Norman Manley, the Corporate Area Champions, 2-0, but gave a good account of themselves. Persons who saw the game say that there is a lot of talent in the team and we should expect great things from the DaCosta team in about two (2) years. Congratulations to the Principal and the coaching staff on a wonderful season!

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that Michael Lee Chin, the head of AIC, the Canadian Fund Management Company, that has purchased the Government’s 75% interest in the
National Commercial Bank in Jamaica is a Titchfield past student? Michael was at Titchfield in the sixties.

OBITUARY TOSA

The Association extends its condolences to Dame Karlene Davis and her family on the death of her mother, Mrs Inez Leiba. Any person who attended elementary school in Port Antonio in the last fifty years will have been aware of Mrs. Leiba and the contribution she made to education as well as to her church. Mrs. Leiba died just around Christmas time as she was preparing to come home for the holidays. She was eight-six (86) years old The turn-out of her past students at her funeral was a tribute to the high esteem in which she was held. May she rest in peace.
